DESCRIPTION: This test analyzes 4 saliva samples over a 24-hour period for levels of testosterone. Elevated levels suggest androgen resistance, while decreased levels may result from such causes as hypogonadism [the sex glands produce little or no hormones], hepatic cirrhosis, lipid abnormalities, and aging… This Male Hormones test is a noninvasive salivary assessment of the daily circadian activity of bioavailable testosterone. This profile provides insights into a wide range of disorders, from reduced libido and muscle mass to cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
With advancing age, testicular function often declines and levels of free, bioavailable testosterone plummet. By the time a man reaches age 50, his bioavailable levels of testosterone may be half their youthful levels. The primary cause of this decline appears to be chronic deterioration of Ledydig cells in the testes, but the decrease is also influenced by altered hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis activity and age-induced changes in concentrations of sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG).
Testosterone powerfully influences: Emotional well-being, Cardiovascular health, Sexual function, Bone integrity, Muscle mass and strength and Cognitive ability. Because of testosterone’s synergistic impact on immune, metabolic and inflammatory functions in the body, imbalances in the hormone may be found in a diverse array of health disorders, ranging from: rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis [bone loss, thinning and height shortening], insulin resistance, prostate cancer, AIDS susceptibility, decreased muscle mass and strength, low energy levels, hair loss, diminished memory and cognitive ability [ability to focus and think clearly], heart function, as well as impaired sexual health. Testosterone is also closely tied to proper function of the immune system, liver, kidneys, and overall health. Experts estimate that a man's testosterone level drops 1% every year from age 40 through age 80. It is not uncommon for the decline to begin in a man's twenties, right after his level peaks at age 20.
Clinical symptoms of male andropause are often subtle, allowing chronic androgen deficiency to go undetected. This test offers a circadian analysis of testosterone secretion, utilizing four saliva samples collected at morning, noon, afternoon and evening. Unlike total serum measurement of testosterone, which typically reflects both bound and unbound hormone, salivary assessment has the advantage of reflecting only the unbound, bioavailable fraction of hormone.
