A parasite is an organism which feeds off, and usually within, a host body, such as our own body, or other living organisms, like plants and animals. They feed on the nutrients, cells, blood and organs of the host. They reproduce by depositing thousands of eggs, or simply by cell division, within the host's tissues and cells. Parasites are not limited just to the intestines. They can easily travel around the blood stream when small and find a suitable place to grow and develop.
Tapeworms (Cestodes) are generally the largest of the parasites. These segmented worms, containing 50,000 eggs within each of its 3,000-4,000 segments, can release up to one million eggs per day! Some tapeworms may live as long as 25 years and can quickly reach upwards to 10 meters/33 feet in length within the gastrointestinal tract.
Parasites are not designed to kill you, they simply rob your vital organs of their nutrition, causing them to eventually malfunction. When cells are depleted of nutrients required for health and healing, health problems quickly arise.
According to Dr. Hulda Clark - " I have seen that eczema is due to roundworms. Seizures are caused by a single roundworm , Ascarts, getting into the brain. Schizophrenia and depression are caused by parasites in the brain. Asthma is caused by Ascaris in the lungs. Diabetes is caused by the pancreatic fluke of cattle, Eurytrema. Migraines are caused by the threadworm, Strongyloides. Acme rosacea is caused by a Leishmania. Much human heart disease is caused by dog heartworm, Dirofilaria. And the list goes on and on."

This stool test can help reveal hidden causes behind acute or chronic conditions that develop from parasitic infection or dysbiosis. Specimens are carefully analyzed by highly trained technicians using computer-enhanced video microscopy, new staining procedures, and advanced immunoassay techniques. These accurate detection methods allow for increased detection rates, increasing the awareness of the important relationship between parasitic infection and a broad spectrum of illnesses and diseases.
Blastocystis hominis is considered by most authorities to be a pathogen. Transmission is fecal/oral, usually through contact with contaminated food or water. Blastocystis often lodges in the intestinal mucosa, making eradication difficult. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, sleeplessness, lassitude, anorexia, pruritis, irritable bowel or fever. although asymptomatic infections can occur. It has also been reported in association with many chronic conditions including chronic fatigue and reactive arthritis. Three forms have been identified, with the vacuolated form being the most frequently seen in fecal specimens.
Endolimax nana transmission occurs by ingestion of the cyst stage in contaminated food or water. The organism resides in the lumen of the colon and cecum. Infections may be asymptomatic or present with diarrhea. Infection has also been associated with reactive arthritis and urticaria. Although textbooks traditionally consider this organism a commensal, it may be associated with and play a role in chronic illness.
Entamoeba hartmanni transmission occurs via ingestion of the cyst either from person to person or by contaminated food or water. Although textbooks traditionally consider this organism a commensal, it may be associated with and play a role in chronic illness.
The increase in worldwide travel, coupled with increasing immigration into the United States, contributes to the spread and incidence of parasitic infections. In addition, parasitic infections are commonly transmitted through fecally contaminated food, water, or other materials within this country.
Susceptibility to Parasite Infection:
It is generally assumed that travel to a Third World country or the occasional camping trip are
prerequisites for acquiring a parasite infection. Owing to a combination of extensive worldwide travel, increasing immigration to the United States, day care centers and other sources of easy transmission, anyone is now susceptible. Diarrheal diseases, in fact, (bacterial as well as parasitic) constitute the greatest worldwide cause of morbidity and mortality.
Pathogenicity [disease-causing]:
Various organisms are increasingly recognized for their potential pathogenicity. For example:
• Giardia lamblia is the leading cause of intestinal parasitic infection in the United States. Only a few decades ago it was not considered pathogenic.
• Cryptosporidium, a well-known pathogen in animals, was only recently identified as a
human pathogen.
• Blastocytis hominis is the most frequently observed fecal parasite. Its level of pathogenicity
continues to be controversial.
Pathogenicity, in general, appears to vary depending on the parasite itself, host susceptibility, and the microbiological environment in which the parasite lives.
Symptoms of Parasite Infection:
The most common symptoms of parasite infection are diarrhea and abdominal pain. Other symptoms may include flatulence, anorexia, weight loss, fevers, chills, blood or mucus in the stool, and fatigue.
Systemic Complaints:
We generally think of parasite infection as causing acute gastrointestinal symptoms. An increasing number of parasite cases feature systemic complaints not traditionally associated with parasites, such as:
• Urticaria
• Reactive arthritis
• Chronic fatigue, asthma and constipation in individuals who are immunocompromised or
whose intestinal flora is chronically imbalanced.
Diagnosing Parasitic Infections:
The diagnosis of parasitic infections depends on the laboratory, with detection rates dramatically increasing with more sophisticated procedures. Genova Diagnostics’ Comprehensive Parasitology Profile uses the most technologically advanced procedures to accurately identify a wide range of protozoal parasites, including amoebae, flagellates, ciliates, coccidia and microsporidia.
Specimens are carefully analyzed by highly-trained technicians using computer-enhanced microscopy, new staining procedures, and advanced immunoassay techniques. These accurate detection methods allow for increased detection rates, intensifying the awareness of the important relationship between parasitic infection and a broad spectrum of illnesses.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's bugging you?
Parasites [including tapeworms] affect millions of Americans--even those who never leave the country. They can cause symptoms from intestinal disorders to problems throughout the body.
Why should I be concerned about parasites?
Parasites are much more common in the United States and other developed countries than you may realize. They also cause many diarrhea diseases, which can lead to serious illness and even death. An intestinal parasite can weaken your body's natural immune system, making you more susceptible to other illnesses. The frequency of world travel and increased immigration to the United States has resulted in the significant spread of parasitic infection.
What are intestinal parasites?
Intestinal parasites are organisms that live within the intestinal tract, growing and feeding off your body. They range from visible worms (like tapeworms and pinworms) to microscopic organisms such as Giardia lamblia.
How do you get parasites?
Parasites are found in raw and undercooked food and treated and untreated water; are transmitted by insects and household pets; and are passed from person to person through unsanitary habits and poor hygiene. Parasites travel in different ways. For example, the microorganism Giardia, which causes persistent diarrhea, fever, cramps and other symptoms, is contained in feces. It gets into public water supplies when animal or human sewage contaminates the water source. It can also be transmitted from person to person through careless diaper changing and poor hygiene in day care centers. Another parasite, Cryptosporidium, infests public water systems and can cause widespread outbreaks of severe diarrhea and cramps. It has been found in water supplies throughout the United States, and the disease it causes can prove fatal for people with weakened immune systems. Other parasites are found in raw, rare or undercooked meats and fish, while others are in contaminated soil. Many immigrants to the United States unknowingly carry parasites that can produce symptoms in Americans, transmitting the organisms into food through unsanitary practices in restaurant kitchens.
What are the symptoms of a parasite infection?
Almost any persistent digestive disorder could result from a parasite. The most common symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal pain. Other symptoms include nausea, heartburn, vomiting, gas and bloating, foul-smelling stools, anorexia or weight loss, gastritis, fever and chills, headache, constipation, blood or mucus in stools, and fatigue.
Other health problems can result from disturbed digestive processes or toxins produced by the parasite, such as aches and pains in the joints and muscles, anemia, allergies, chronic fatigue, immune dysfunction, sleep disturbances and depression.
Ongoing irritation from a parasitic infection can alter the lining of your intestine, creating the "leaky gut" syndrome which permits toxic compounds to permeate into the body through the intestine. A variety of disorders, including food allergy and inflammatory bowel disease, can result from altered intestinal permeability.
How can I tell if I have parasites?
Many symptoms of a parasitic infection are similar to other illnesses, making it particularly important to test for parasites for proper diagnosis and treatment. A comprehensive parasites test, using a stool sample analyzed by a laboratory specializing in parasite testing, is the most effective way to diagnose this type of infection.
How do you eliminate parasites?
Eliminating the parasitic infection is the key to relieving the symptoms of infection, or the parasites will continue to grow and reproduce. Health care professionals use a variety of treatments to eliminate parasites, including antiparasitic herbs, diet changes and adding "friendly" bacteria flora to your gastrointestinal tract. I suggest this Anti-Parasite Formula
How do I prevent parasites?
- Wash your hands before eating, after cleaning up and after playing with pets.
- Order your food cooked to medium or well-done when eating out. Don't eat in places that appear unsanitary.
- Replace intestinal flora regularly with probiotics.
- Don't drink unfiltered or untreated water, no matter how pure it looks. Drink boiled or bottled water when traveling in undeveloped countries.
- Insist on antiseptic cleaning practices at day care centers.
A parasitic infection can happen to almost anyone, not just world travelers. Complete this checklist to determine if your health problems could be caused by parasites.
Do you have diarrhea frequently?
Do you have abdominal pain or cramps?
Do you have intestinal gas frequently?
Do you suffer from bloating?
Have you noticed weight loss without trying?
Are you anorexic now or have you ever been?
After meals, do you often have heartburn or find it necessary to belch frequently?
Do you often have constipation?
Do you often experience nausea?
Do you suffer from chronic fatigue?
Have you noticed blood or mucus in your stools?
Have you traveled outside the U.S. in the past year?
If you answered yes to two or more questions, an intestinal parasite may be causing your symptoms, but treating the symptoms alone won't eliminate the parasitic infection. A stool parasites test might be helpful.
