5 Beauty Essentials Every Woman Should Own

Finding the ideal beauty products can be overwhelming with so many choices available. But here are some tried-and-true classics everyone should use for daily upkeep of a polished aesthetic.

Foundation is an integral component of any makeup routine, not only providing coverage but also shielding the skin from damaging UV rays.

1. Emulsion

Emulsion moisturizers, or water-based moisturizers, provide long-lasting hydration for K-beauty skincare needs. Non-comedogenic and lightweight, they can quench thirsty skin without leaving behind a greasy feeling behind.

They don’t feel as heavy as creams, making them ideal for oily or acne-prone skin types who want a lighter, more easily absorbed moisturizer. You can layer them under another more concentrated moisturizer for quick hydration boost, plus there are formulations with specific ingredients designed to target specific concerns or skin types.

To maximize the benefit of an emulsion, it should be applied after serum and (optionally) under sunscreen. Applying an emulsion right after serum helps lock in active ingredients and prevent any diluting of their effectiveness.

2. Moisturizer

Moisturizers are a must-have skincare component that prevents dryness, protects sensitive skin, improves tone and texture, reduces wrinkles and other signs of aging, and keeps skin looking young. Plus they contain ingredients which brighten, hydrate, and soothe the skin for added benefits.

Lotions are designed to hydrate thicker body skin, while creams and ointments offer more concentrated formulas designed for facial use. Both can be applied twice daily for healthy hydration.

3. Eye Serum

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than other parts of the body, making it particularly susceptible to developing fine lines and wrinkles that may make you appear older than you actually are.

Eye serum is a must-have skincare item designed specifically for the delicate eye area to combat these problems by providing nourishing hydration. Additionally, it helps reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness that may give off tired-looking eyes.

Like other serums, an eye serum has a lightweight formula that allows it to penetrate deeply into the skin. It typically contains anti-aging ingredients like hyaluronic acid to plump up skin and diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Skin Essence

Korean and Japanese skin care routines call for the use of a Skin Essence, which is an essential step in their regimen. This toner-serum hybrid hydrates skin while priming it for the rest of your skincare ritual.

Ni’Kita Wilson, a cosmetic chemist, told Allure that essences are “like loosening garden soil before watering it,” due to their high concentrations of hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, yeast and rice ferments.

They provide moisture to all skin types and can even reduce oiliness and the appearance of large pores (L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Crystal Micro-Essence). To use, pour some drops into the palm of your hand then pat them onto face, neck and decolletage areas.

5. Post-Shave Balm

After shaving, skin can become dry and sensitive to irritation. This could lead to redness, razor burn or even ingrown hairs; therefore, using a post-shave balm after every shave is essential for soothing and healing the skin.

The primary distinction between an aftershave balm and lotion is that the former does not contain alcohol, making it gentler on skin and less likely to sting when applied.

The ideal aftershave balms contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile and jojoba oil to reduce skin inflammation and maintain moisture. You may even find balms with antiseptic ingredients like tea tree oil to help reduce adult acne.
